Ripple Effects
The one-acre earthwork is inspired by ripples in a pond and the concept that one's actions have ongoing effects. People stand at the center of the ripples and visually become part of the art. The work reclaimed a sugarbeet byproduct waste dump by bringing in topsoil and seeding with prairie grasses. It was commissioned in 1998 by the City of Fort Collins, Colorado, next to the Cache La Poudre River along Timberline Road. It includes a 270-foot long masonry wall made of large stone slabs and embedded carvings, brick and metal insets related to the river and historic use of the property.
